India has reached a new milestone with the successful installation of 2.1GW of PV systems in the second phase of its rooftop PV program.

India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has reached a new milestone with the successful installation of 2.1GW of PV systems in the second phase of the country's rooftop PV program, the ministry said in a recent update. India's Minister of New and Renewable Energy shared this information and emphasized the ongoing efforts to promote clean energy adoption across the country.

In the second phase of the program, India's Central Financial Assistance (CFA) is being scaled up to support the installation of grid-connected rooftop PV systems in the residential sector. Its subsidy policy has been carefully designed to encourage the adoption of PV systems by individual residential consumers.

For states falling under the general category, its subsidy policy is as follows:

(1) PV system above 3kW: Rs. 14,588/kW.

(2) PV systems above 3kW and below 10kW: Rs. 14,588/kW for initial 3kW and Rs. 7,294/kW thereafter.

(3) PV systems above 10kW: fixed subsidy of Rs 94,822/kW.

The subsidy policy has been slightly modified in specific regions of India such as North Eastern States, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Lakshadpur, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

(1) PV systems above 3kW: Rs. 17,662/kW.

(2) PV systems above 3kW and below 10kW: Rs. 17,662/kW for the initial 3kW and Rs. 8,831/kW thereafter.

(3) PV systems above 10kW: fixed subsidy of Rs 1,14,803/kW.

Launched in March 2019 with a total financial allocation of Rs 118.14 billion, the program not only supports the installation of residential PV systems, but also provides incentives to distributors who exceed the base installed capacity in their operating areas. The second phase of rooftop PV being implemented is on a demand-driven basis and the installed capacity of PV systems will be allocated on the basis of the recommendations of the power distributors. As of July 31, 2023, 2.207GW of rooftop PV systems have been successfully installed in the residential sector out of the 3.37GW of installed capacity allocated.

These achievements mark a significant step towards cleaner and sustainable energy in India.
